Griffith Park

Who knew we would have so much fun hiking? Our family always has the best time when we are hiking a trail or along the beach or walking in a garden! Many times the kids are like ughhhh hiking again??!! Then they end up having a blast, and tons of laughs…..usually at my expense 🙂 On our last visit to Los Angeles we went to Griffith Park to hike up close to the Hollywood sign. We could have gotten closer but it was a few more miles, and boy was it hot that day. I enjoyed the sign from a distance.

Griffith Observatory

We made our way to Griffith Park Observatory, you will recognize this building it has been used in many movies such as

  • Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
  • La La Land (2016)
  • Gangster Squad (2013)
  • The Terminator (1984)
  • Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003)
  • The Rocketeer (1991)

Along with miles and miles of trails there are so many other things you can do at the park including a visit to the observatory, here they have exhibits, monthly Star Parties where the whole family can look at the sun, moon and planets with the assistance of professionals from local astronomical societies. Every evening as long as its clear you can use the public telescopes to watch the stars over LA. So cool right?

There is also a merry-go-round, zoo, horseback riding, the Hollywood sign and a miniature train ride, truly something for everyone. In fact the park is over 4000 acres. Now that is big!

PRO TIP!! Before heading out on a hike you want to be sure you are prepared. Sunblock, hats, water(plenty of it) and cell phones are necessary. Always be aware of your surroundings too, there are many different types of wildlife out there, including snakes, coyotes and foxes. Maps are helpful too, and be sure you chose a trail designated for your abilities, some trails are very steep and rocky and can be long. We opt for the beginner trails 🙂

we hiked pretty far!

Southern California is so much fun, there is plenty to do outdoors and we hiked a few times while we were there. I will post another blog on other trails we visited soon.
